EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT VOTES TO ADOPT EU COPYRIGHT DIRECTIVE
Magazines Ireland, the association of Irish magazine media brands welcomes MEPs’ adoption in Plenary in Strasbourg today, Tuesday, 26 March, of the EU Copyright Directive – a copyright reform that is crucial for the future of a healthy, independent press sector and a content-rich internet.
Ciaran Casey, Chairman, Magazines Ireland said: “We welcome the European Parliament vote to allow a fair value exchange between those who produce content and those who distribute it for their own commercial gain. As magazine publishers, we thank Europe’s regulators for adopting this important directive that acknowledges the value of magazine media to society and the need for fair remuneration for the commercial re-use of our intellectual property.”
Magazines Ireland CEO, Grace Aungier commented, “This directive will promote fairness in the digital ecosystem by allowing magazine publishers to negotiate licence agreements and protect the unauthorised reproduction and distribution of our members’ publications in the digital world. It will help forge a healthier working relationship between creators and platforms and allow publishers to continue to invest in the creation of fact-checked, professional content to enrich the internet and benefit consumers.”
