On 12 September, the future of the European press is in your hands: we urge you to vote in favor of the introduction of a neighbouring right for press publishers as provided for in Article 11 of the proposal for a Directive on Copyright.
Article 11 is essential in order to protect a free, professional and independent press in Ireland and in Europe.
Major US tech players exploit for free press content and keep on reinforcing their dominant position in the digital advertising market of which they control over 70% of the value and 100% of the growth.
The revenues captured from the use of press content must be redistributed towards those who finance and create it.
This is the very aim of a neighbouring right, which will protect the investments of all press publishing houses, whether large or small, and complement the copyright protection granted to journalists. It will help restore balance between the press and global digital platforms.
Without a neighbouring right, we witness a general impoverishment of the production and dissemination of quality information and consequently to a proliferation of fake news.
In the face of the aggressive disinformation campaign the European Parliament has been subject to, we must reaffirm some truths: yes, the introduction of a neighbouring right will strengthen the access to a free and open internet. It will not deprive internet users from the possibility to engage with social networks, create blogs, share opinions, photos and links to press content.
Europe cannot afford to give up its sovereignty by weakening the role of the press in the democratic debate.
European legislators: we hope we can rely on your support by pursuing the copyright reform and by adopting a strong Article 11.
